2 people dead, 3 police officers wounded in Miami

MIAMI, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Gunfire between police and suspects following a drugstore robbery in Miami's Little Havana neighborhood Tuesday left two people dead and three officers wounded.

Authorities said all three officers were expected to survive, the Miami Herald reported. One was shot in the stomach and the other two were wounded in their arms.

Three other officers from Miami and Hialeah suffered other injuries related to the pre-dawn episode, the newspaper said.

Law enforcement sources and a man who claimed he was a friend told the Herald Adrian Montesano, 27, tried to hold up a Walgreens at gunpoint.

He allegedly shot one officer who tried to arrest him after catching up with him several blocks away. Montesano took the officer's gun and drove away in the officer's patrol car, police said.

The squad car was found abandoned in Hialeah about 5:30 a.m. and Hialeah police spotted Montesano and another person in another car nearby a short time later.

A subsequent chase ended with the suspect's car crashing and the occupants exchanging gunfire with police. Police said both occupants died but the Herald said it was unclear who was with Montesano or how that person was involved.
