Young newlyweds charged with killing man for thrill

SUNBURY, Pa., Dec. 7 (UPI) -- A couple lured a man into a trap and killed him three weeks after they were married, police in Sunbury, Pa., say.

Elyette Barbour, 22, of Selinsgrove, Pa., was charged with murder Friday night, the (Sunbury) Daily Item reported. His wife Miranda, 18, was arrested Tuesday.

The body of Troy LaFerrara, 42, of Port Treverton, Pa., was found Nov. 12 in a Sunbury alley. Investigators say the Barbours stabbed and strangled him a day earlier.

Elyette Barbour told police the couple had tried to lure other men, investigators said.

"LaFerrara was just the one with whom it worked," he allegedly said.

The couple had been living in North Carolina but moved to Selinsgrove in October. Elyette Barbour allegedly said his wife has an 18-month-old child fathered by a man who is now dead, and Sunbury Police Chief Steve Mazzeo said that death -- in another state -- is now likely to be investigated as well.

Investigators said LaFerrara responded to a Craigslist ad offering "conversation." Miranda allegedly met him at the Susquehanna Valley Mall and took him to her Honda, where her husband was hiding in the back seat.

After her arrest, Miranda Barbour allegedly admitted killing LaFerrara, saying she had done it by herself. Her husband came to the Item office Wednesday and said he did not know anything about the killing until his wife told him just before her arrest.

Elyette said his wife is not "a cold killer," the newspaper said.
