Teen dies on Seattle-to-Atlanta flight

SPOKANE, Wash., Dec. 7 (UPI) -- A 16-year-old boy died Saturday after suffering a medical emergency aboard a Delta Air Lines jetliner en route from Seattle to Atlanta, authorities said.

A spokesman for the fire department in Spokane, Wash., said the medical emergency caused the Boeing 767's pilot to divert the flight to Spokane about 30 minutes into the flight, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Delta Flight 128, with 258 passengers aboard, had left Seattle about 9 a.m. PST.

Spokane Fire Assistant Chief Brian Schaeffer told the newspaper an autopsy was to be performed on the teen, who authorities said was originally from the Atlanta area and had a pre-existing medical condition.

Schaeffer said the boy was traveling with family members to celebrate Christmas with relatives in Georgia.

He said the boy's father is in the military and is stationed in Washington.
