Eleven cultural traditions get 'intangible heritage' designation

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- The U.N. Economic, Scientific and Cultural Organization has added put 11 cultural heritages to its safeguarded list Friday, a UNESCO statement said Friday.

The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage identified the indigenous cultural treasures at its weeklong meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The process of recognizing the cultural treasures is called "inscribing the elements on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanly," the statement said, and serves to raise awareness of "communities' traditions and know-how that reflect their cultural diversity."

The eleven new inscriptions include Mongolia's Mongol Ger traditional craftsmanship, Peru's Q'eswachaka rope suspension bridge, South Korea's kimjang and kimchi preserved vegetables, Romania and Moldova's Colindat Christmas singers, Senegal's Xooy divining ceremony, the music of Slovakia's Terchova ensembles, Macedonia's religious Feast of the Forty Holy Martyrs, Turkey's coffee culture and tradition, Ukraine's Petrykivka decorative folk painting, Venezuela's festive Day of San Pedro observances and Vietnam's Don ca tai tur music.
