Princeton Triangle Club accountant charged with embezzlement

TRENTON, N.J., Dec. 2 (UPI) -- A Princeton Triangle Club accountant has been charged with embezzling more than $100,000 from the college theatrical troupe, New Jersey officials said Monday.

Thomas J. Muza, 55, of Hightstown was charged with second-degree theft by unlawful taking. He allegedly wrote checks and deposited them in his own accounts, the state Attorney General's Office said, alleging in one instance, Muza wrote a check for $30,000 to pay off personal credit card debt.

The state's investigation found thefts dating back to 2010, although authorities suspect he began stealing money earlier, The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported. Muza had been the club's accountant from 2003 until he was fired in November. He also has been suspended as general manager of McCarter Theatre, a non-profit associated with the university.

Muza surrendered to authorities Nov. 27.

The famous Princeton Theatrical Club is a Princeton University-sanctioned touring musical comedy group founded in 1891, whose members have included F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jimmy Stewart, Jose Ferrar and Brooke Shields, the newspaper noted.
