PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla., Nov. 28 (UPI) -- A Florida bride faces criminal charges after allegedly charging $50,000 in wedding costs on her employers' credit cards, police say.
La'Reese Michelle Darville 31, was jailed Monday after being charged with fraud and grand theft in Port St. Lucie, WPEC-TV, West Palm Beach reported.
Darville allegedly told detectives she charged bills for her June wedding at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino to credit cards belonging to Partners III Pawn Shop in Port St. Lucie, where her bosses include her father, the TV station said. Suspicions were raised when the business started getting late-payment notices this month for a credit card that hadn't been used for two years.
The pawn shop owners and police determined Darville, who had managed the store's books the past eight years, had put about $50,000 on the cards in 14 transactions starting in September 2012. The owners told police she made payments on the cards using the pawn shop's checking account, WPEC-TV, said.
Darville told the TV station such activities were common among the store employees and she didn't see anything wrong with it. She told investigators she had repaid the business for all but $3,000 of the total paid from the checking account, using her own money she put into the daily cash flow, but had no records to prove it.
Darville, who another employee said no longer works for the business, said she intended to repay the full amount.
