FALFURRIAS, Texas, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- The driver of a vehicle with 14 passengers aboard could face murder charges after an accident left five dead, the Falfurrias, Texas, police chief said.
The SUV struck a tree Saturday night, several miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border. The unidentified driver was injured, as were several of the passengers, believed to be undocumented immigrants, the San Antonio Express-News reported Tuesday.
A police patrol car attempted to stop the speeding vehicle, Falfurrias Police Chief Ramiro Gonzalez said.
After the driver, also an undocumented immigrant, is released from the hospital, "he will be taken into Border Patrol custody, and more than likely, he will be facing murder charges because of the evading," Rodriguez said, adding Homeland Security Investigations will likely file federal charges against the driver.
