Rights group condemns proposed Afghan punishment of stoning

NEW YORK, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- The Afghan government should reject a proposal to restore stoning as punishment for adultery, the advocacy organization Human Rights Watch said Monday.

A proposed legal code for Afghanistan includes provisions on "moral crimes" involving sex outside of marriage that call for stoning as punishment, the group, based in New York, said in a statement.

The statement added the proposal calls for both parties involved in sexual intercourse outside of marriage to be stoned to death.

"It is absolutely shocking that, 12 years after the fall of the Taliban government, the [Afghan President Hamid] Karzai administration might bring back stoning as a punishment," said Brad Adams, Asia director of Human Rights Watch.
