BOSTON, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Editors of a student-run publication at Harvard University apologized for an anti-Semitic blog post that caused a stir on the Boston campus.
The blog post was written last week by an anonymous person who Harvard Ichthus editors said was raised Jewish but converted to Christianity. In it, the writer said Jews killed Jesus Christ and "deserved" the persecution they've suffered since.
"We, the Jews, collectively rejected God and hung him up on a cross to die, and thus we deserved the punishments that were heaped on our heads over the last 2,000 years," the article said.
The blog post, titled "Why Us?," was posted to the website of the undergraduate publication. Ichthus Editor in Chief Aaron Gyde apologized Saturday for the post -- and for editing and reporting it again Friday -- saying the author's intentions were not to offend.
"Firstly, we apologize for inadequate editorial oversight in the publishing and re-publishing of this blog post," he said. "While this does not excuse the post of responsibility, it was not the intent of the writer, nor the Ichthus, to present a piece that is anti-Semitic in nature or in interpretation. The writer holds nothing but love for his heritage and feels very deeply for the welfare of the Jewish people. The blog was not intended to communicate animosity, but concern and a sincere desire to communicate the necessity of salvation through Jesus Christ alone."
