NEW YORK, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- A bird strike at New York City's JFK Airport startled passengers on a Virgin American flight, officials said.
The incident happened Sunday evening as Virgin American flight 220 from San Francisco landed at the airport, WABC-TV, New York, reported.

Two birds hit one of the plane's engines and the cockpit filled with the smell of smoke.
The pilot declares an emergency, but landed safely.
No one was injured in the incident.
The plane was inspected for damage after it landed.
