Tropical Storm Melissa speeding across Atlantic

MIAMI, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Tropical Storm Melissa sped across the North Atlantic Ocean Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Wednesday.

In its 5 p.m. EST update, the center said the storm was centered about 820 miles west of the Azores, moving to the east-northeast at 30 mph. It was pushing maximum sustained winds of 50 mph -- down from 60 mph at mid-morning -- up to 240 miles from its center.

Little change in the storm's strength was forecast in the next 48 hours, though it's expected to change to an easterly track on Friday and lose its tropical characteristics.

No coastal watches or warnings were in effect, though gale-force winds are expected to hit the western and central Azores starting late Thursday, forecasters said.
