Estimated $1B in losses from weekend storms could be record

NEWARK, Calif., Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Cost of the deadly tornadoes and severe weather that rampaged through the U.S. Midwest during the weekend could exceed $1 billion, a risk management firm says.

The firm, RMS, said if the estimate is correct, Sunday's rash of storms would be the costliest for the insurance industry ever to occur in November, USA Today reported Tuesday.

It also would rank as one of the five most costly weather events to occur in November since 1950, RMS said.

Tornadoes in Illinois killed six people Sunday, the deadliest outbreak for the state during the month of November, said Weather Underground historian Christopher Burt.

Seven weather disasters this year have caused at least $1 billion in losses, said Aon Benfield, a global reinsurance firm.
