Congresswoman Meng hit on head, robbed in Washington

WASHINGTON, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Grace Meng, D-N.Y., said Wednesday it was "frightening" but she was not seriously hurt when a mugger hit her on the head and stole her handbag.

The first-term congresswoman was attacked and robbed Tuesday night near the Capitol in Washington as she headed to her apartment after dinner, Washington publication The Hill reported.

"While this was a frightening ordeal, I fortunately was not seriously injured," Meng said. "Obviously, things could have been much worse. I thank the U.S. Capitol Police and the District of Columbia Police for responding quickly and professionally."

Meng's injuries included a bruised chin. She underwent a CAT scan at George Washington University Hospital.

The incident meant she missed two votes Wednesday, but she was back at work later in the day.

No arrests had been made.
