CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Virginia state Sen. Creigh Deeds was stabbed and his 24-year-old son was shot and killed in an assault at Deeds' home near Charlottesville, Va., police said.
Deeds, 55, was taken to University of Virginia Health System Hospital where he has spoken with investigators, police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said Tuesday. His son, Gus Deeds, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Geller told reporters police went to Creigh Deeds' home at 7:25 a.m. in response to a 911 call, The Washington Post reported. Police said Gus Deeds had been shot and wounded and Creigh Deeds had been stabbed in the head and upper torso.
Police have not said how they think the assault occurred but Geller said investigators were "not looking for a third person."

The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., said Gus Deeds withdrew last month after having been enrolled as a student from time to time during the past six years, the Post reported.
Creigh Deeds was the Democratic nominee for Virginia governor in 2009, losing to Robert McDonnell, who is leaving officer due to term limits.
"In this tough and sad time, our thoughts and prayers are with the Deeds family," McDonnell said in a prepared statement.
"Creigh Deeds is an exceptional and committed public servant who has always done what he believes is best for Virginia and who gives his all to public service," McDonnell said.
Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe issued a statement calling the attack "a truly sad day for Virginia and for the many people who know Creigh as the fine public servant and friend he is."
