36 million Americans moved last year, Census Bureau says

WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- About 36 million Americans, or 11.7 percent of the population, moved in the past year, the U.S. Census Bureau reported Monday.

The number of movers is down from 12 percent in 2012, and compares to 11.6 percent in 2011.

"Relatively few of these movers traveled long distances," said David Ihrke, a Census Bureau demographer. "In fact, nearly two-thirds stayed in the same county."

The statistics indicate even those who left their counties tended not to travel far. Of inter-county movers, 40.2 percent relocated fewer than 50 miles away. Only 24.7 moved 500 or more miles to their new locations.

The information comes from the report "Geographical Mobility: 2012 to 2013," a collection of national and regional tables from the Census Bureau's Annual Social and Economic Supplement of the Current Population Survey.
