When the officer ordered the teen, whose name wasn't reported, to show his hands, the officer saw the teen allegedly holding what appeared to be a large-caliber handgun, the Battle Creek Enquirer reported.

The officer shot the teen, who then ran away. Police chased the boy and called for an ambulance. Saylor said the boy's injuries didn't appear to be life-threatening.

The officer who shot the boy was put on paid administrative leave while Michigan State Police investigate, the newspaper said.
