Sex in school closet, videotaped, costs teacher his job

COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- An Iowa school superintendent said she was unable to confirm that a teacher resigned after he was caught engaging in sex with a colleague in a school closet.

Marlene Johnson, district superintendent of the Columbus Community school district in Louisa County, Iowa, told the Des Moines Register she could not discuss the matter or confirm it ever happened, but court records from science teacher Robert Brown's request for unemployment benefits confirmed his actions with a colleague were videotaped, the newspaper said.

At a public hearing earlier this year, dealing with Brown's request for benefits after his resignation, Johnson testified she heard rumors at the school during the 2011-12 school year regarding an inappropriate relationship between Brown and a female colleague.

Johnson said she had surveillance cameras installed throughout the school at the start of the following school year, including one in a classroom closet, and a resulting videotape showed Brown and the colleague entering the closet at two separate times over the course of a school day, at lunch and after classes were dismissed.

"It shows their faces, it shows them taking their clothes off, it shows them having sex, it shows, you know, everything," Johnson testified.

Brown resigned his position with the school district, then sought unemployment benefits, claiming the encounters were on his personal time. An Iowa judge ruled against him, the newspaper said.
