Scholastic to stop selling book that excludes Israel from map

NEW YORK, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- Scholastic, the world's biggest children's book publisher, said it mistakenly omitted the state of Israel from a map in one of its books.

"Thea Stilton and the Blue Scarab Hunt" ends with a map of modern Egypt and its neighboring countries, The Times of Israel said.

The territory of Israel is covered by Jordan, and a line to indicate the Israel border with the Sinai peninsula does not appear in the map.

Adina Golombek, a Jerusalem resident who moved from Israel to Canada last year, said she was shocked to see the error in the book, which is part of the popular Geronimo Stilton children's series.

"I wanted to show my son where we lived in the Middle East, but it didn't say Israel on the map; instead it said Jordan," Golombek told The Times of Israel.

Kyle Good, the senior vice president for corporate communications at Scholastic, said that the company would stop selling the book and that it would correct the error.

A recent study found that 96 percent of Palestinian schoolbooks do not mention Israel in maps while 87 percent of Israeli books do not identify the Palestinian territories by name, The Times of Israel reported.
