Bus driver suspended over 'not see' vanity license plate

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- A San Diego school bus driver has been suspended from his job over his license plates that read "not see," a spelling variation for "Nazi," officials said.

Along with being suspended by the San Diego School District, Shawn Calpito, of Kearny Mesa, Calif., was ordered by the Department of Motor Vehicles to surrender his license plates, KGTV, San Diego, reported Wednesday.

Above the "not see" plate on his personal vehicle, Calpito also had a swastika.

"This concern was brought to the district's attention yesterday. School bus driver Shawn Calpito has been placed on leave pending investigation," the school district said in a statement.

Parents of children who may have been driven to school by Calpito say they are relieved he isn't driving anymore.

"Hopefully my kids wouldn't ride on his bus. I mean, I would prefer the bus driver who doesn't espouse those ideas," said Ian Seruello, whose child rides a bus.

Another parent added, "Yeah, he could influence them. He could say certain things. They know what they're doing. They know how to brainwash. They know how to do these things."

Civil rights attorney Jim McElroy said the DMV regulates every vanity license plate, but that Calpito's "was so subtle that without the other symbol, there's no way for someone regulating this to realize this is supporting Nazis."
