WILTON, Conn., Nov. 13 (UPI) -- A Connecticut woman lost one of her arms and a hand when the family's pit bull attacked her, police say.

The victim, Anne Murray, 56, was recovering at a Norwalk hospital, but police said they had to shoot and kill the dog, the Connecticut Post in Bridgeport reported Tuesday.

The 2-year-old male dog attacked Murray at her home in Wilton. She managed to crawl underneath a car to escape the animal, said police Lt. Donald Wakeman.

Two motorists found the dog in the road acting "somewhat aggressive," Wakeman. One of them heard someone calling for help and contacted police.

An officer arriving at the scene determined the dog to be an immediate threat and shot the animal, killing it, Wakeman said. The animal's remains will be tested for rabies.

Wakeman said Murray "lost all of her left arm and a portion of her right arm."

The dog belonged to one of Murray's twin sons who lived at the home with her, Wakeman said, but she fed the animal when they weren't home.

The family had gotten the dog when it was a puppy, he added.

The cause of the attack is unknown, Wakeman said.
