Bloomberg promises no criticism of incoming mayor de Blasio

NEW YORK, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Outgoing New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Friday he will not be critical of the incoming administration of Bill de Blasio.

Speaking on his Friday radio program on WOR-AM, Bloomberg promised, "I will not criticize. These jobs are tough enough without an extra voice criticizing you. The first year in particular, when you're new, you just don't need a previous mayor criticizing."

Bloomberg was elected to three terms, as a Republican and then independent candidate. De Blasio, a Democrat, won last week's mayoral election against Republican Joe Lhota.

The New York Times Friday noted Bloomberg has never been shy about voicing his opinion, however unflattering. Bloomberg suggested his vow to keep quiet was inspired by his predecessor in the mayor's office, Rudolph Giuliani.

Bloomberg said that, even though some in the Giuliani administration "probably said something" after Bloomberg became mayor, "Rudy never once did. The way he conducted himself after the new administration took over says a lot about his character."
