Maryland man pleads guilty to selling drugs on Silk Road site

BALTIMORE, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- A Maryland man has pleaded guilty to selling drugs to customers around the world through the secretive online marketplace Silk Road, officials said.

Jacob Theodore George IV, 32, admitted to federal agents in January 2012 he had sold heroin and methylone, also known as "bath salts," on the website, The Baltimore Sun reported Tuesday.

George had been in custody since last year, his attorney said, but he had not been charged until after Silk Road's alleged founder, Ross William Ulbricht, was arrested last month and the site closed down.

George began selling drugs on the site in 2011, with customers paying for their merchandise with bitcoins, a virtual currency. Both sellers and buyers used web monikers to transact business.

George told agents of the Department of Homeland Security the heroin he sold was purchased from dealers in the Baltimore area and that the methylone was imported from China.

George's plea agreement does not indicate how or when authorities located him, but says after his arrest he gave agents access to emails, shipping records and financial statements of his business.
