NEW BRITAIN, Conn., Nov. 5 (UPI) -- A 21-year-old student whose Halloween costume prompted a lockdown at Central Connecticut State University apologized for the "misunderstanding."
David Kyem, a senior from Newington, Conn., was arrested Monday after walking through campus wearing a tactical vest, camouflage pants and carrying plastic weapons, The Hartford Courant reported.
He said he was wearing his Halloween costume home from a weekend party at the University Connecticut because he couldn't fit all the pieces into his bag.
Students on campus mistook his costume for the real thing and called police saying there was a gunman on campus. The calls prompted the school to order a lockdown and Kyem, who was already back in his dorm room at that point, said he didn't realize he was the one to cause the scare.
"My first thought was, 'Oh gosh, what's going on?' " he said. "My friends started calling me and saying, 'Hey Dave, I think somebody got your Halloween costume confused with a gunman.' "
Kyem, whose father is a geography teacher at CCSU, was charged with breach of peace and was released on $1,000 bail, the Courant said.
"I'm sorry for all the commotion and the fear and the confusion," Kyem said. "I'm sorry for any problems. It's obviously a big misunderstanding."
