Georgia family sues over snake-infested apartment

ATLANTA, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- A Georgia family is suing their landlord, alleging their apartment is infested with venomous snakes, their lawyer said.

Shawn Davis, Paul Patterson their children and a small granddaughter moved into an apartment complex in May. Since then, they've spotted numerous snakes they believe are coming from the building's basement.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the building's owner has sent an exterminator to the building on several occasions but the problem persists so the family has sued.

"This is not just an adult couple living here, there are children there also," attorney Jason Wilson said Friday. "These are actually snakes that can harm you. Most landlords would have the common sense to take care of it immediately."

"An exterminator was brought in to do a brief and what would turn out to be completely ineffectual job at fixing the situation," the lawsuit states. "This exterminator would return to the apartment complex twice afterwards -- whenever complaints reached a new peak -- and perform a similarly cosmetic job that had no effect on the population of venomous snakes in Plaintiff's apartment."

Wilson said the family sued because they don't have the money to move to a new apartment.
