House ethics panel won't probe eight congress members arrested

WASHINGTON, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- The House Ethics Committee decided against pursuing an investigation into the arrests of eight House members at a Washington rally in early October.

"The Committee considered the scope and nature of the conduct of the Members ... and determined that review by an investigative subcommittee is not required in this matter," said a report issued by the committee Thursday.

On Oct. 8, Washington metro police arrested Democratic Reps. Joseph Crowley of New York, Keith Ellison of Minnesota, Al Green of Texas, Raul M. Grijalva of Arizona, Luis V. Gutierrez of Illinois, John Lewis of Georgia, Charles B. Rangel of New York and Jan Schakowsky of Illinois for blocking passage.

The representatives each were fined $50 and the charges dropped.

"[The] local proceedings related to these arrests are now resolved," the ethics panel said. "The committee voted against empaneling an investigative subcommittee regarding this matter."

"The committee considered the scope and nature of the conduct of the members," the report said, "and determined that review by an investigative subcommittee is not required in this matter."
