WASHINGTON, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- At least 42 U.S. colleges are giving prospective students more time to apply for early decision admission because of glitches with application software.
The Common Application, used by 517 colleges and universities, is now in its fourth version. Problems surfaced soon after it was introduced Aug. 1, The Washington Post reported.
Many of those who have tried to use the Common App have been unable to upload documents or have found their accounts frozen. For nearly 200 schools, the app is the only way to apply.
For many schools, Nov. 1 is the deadline for early decision applications. Those applicants agree to attend the school of their choice if they are admitted.
The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., is giving applicants an additional week, until Nov. 8, the Post said. George Washington University in Washington pushed the deadline back to Nov. 11.
