EASTON, Pa., Oct. 30 (UPI) -- A Pennsylvania school district is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to ban students from wearing breast cancer awareness bracelets proclaiming a love for "boobies."
The Easton Area School District board voted 7-1 Tuesday to authorize the district solicitor to file the appeal, The Express-Times, of Easton, reported.
U.S. District Judge Mary McLaughlin initially ruled in 2011 that students can't be suspended for flouting the school's ban on the bracelets -- reading "I (heart) Boobies! (Keep A Breast) -- to support breast cancer awareness. She said the bracelets were viewed as free speech, but the school district said they were lewd and disruptive.
"The Third Circuit Court has compromised administrators' abilities to intervene in what is and what is not appropriate in school," said Superintendent John Reinhart said.
The National Association of School Psychologists, the National School Boards Association and the Pennsylvania School Board Association are backing the district on its appeal, the newspaper said.
They are also "concerned about the implications of a hyper-sexualized environment," Reinhart said.
