WEST CHESTER, Pa., Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Pennsylvania authorities advised parents to be cautious this Halloween after more than 40 pounds of drug-laced candy were found on a college campus.
The candy, which contained the active compound in marijuana, was found Oct. 20 in an apartment on the south campus of West Chester University, the Daily Local News in West Chester reported Monday.
In a news conference, the Chester County District Attorney's Office said the candy was in a variety of sizes and packaged for individual sale and distribution.
While Chief Deputy District Attorney Patrick Carmody said production of the candy was probably an isolated incident, the timing of the discovery served as a warning to parents.
"With Halloween just around the corner, the last thing we want to see is drug-laced candy hitting the streets," he said.
Officers were led to the apartment after questioning several college students inside a parked car from which police could smell the aroma of marijuana.
The apartment was occupied by a 24-year-old student university officials said had recently transferred to the school.
The student was suspended and ordered off campus, reported WPVI-TV in Philadelphia.
Carmody said they expected to arrest the student.
"We are still gathering information about the drugs themselves and completing testing of them and we want to do further investigation of potential sources of the drugs," he said.
Police don't think the candy was intended to be handed out to children at Halloween.
