Former Missouri police officer gets life imprisonment in murder

HARRISONVILLE, Mo., Oct. 28 (UPI) -- A former Grandview, Mo., police officer was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole Monday for murdering a woman five years ago.

Jeffrey Moreland, 54, was convicted in September in the 2008 killing of Cara Jo Roberts, 30, of Harrisonville. He received his sentence from Cass County Circuit Judge Michael Wagner.

Investigators testified during Moreland's trial he broke into Roberts' home, sexually assaulted her, forced her into a full bathtub and shot her in the back of the head.

For several years afterward, investigators had fingerprints and DNA of a suspect but no match until Moreland became a suspect in another slaying. Moreland was charged and is awaiting trial in that case, The Kansas City Star reported.
