First legal marijuana retail store plans opening in Washington state

SPOKANE, Wash., Oct. 28 (UPI) -- A company that believes the era of legal sales of recreational marijuana is about to dawn says it plans to open its first retail store within a year.

Diego Pellicer plans to offer premium marijuana at its store in Washington state where, like Colorado, the sale of marijuana for recreational purposes was recently legalized, ABC News reported Monday.

Most states that allow the sale of marijuana restrict it to medical uses.

Company founder James Shively said the plant is an "incredible boost to creativity," noting the idea for the company came during "a brainstorm session with cannabis."

His marketing plan calls for matching types of marijuana to customers' personalities. "Think of this as an eHarmony.com of cannabis," Shively said.

Two Diego Pellicer stores are currently operating with Northwest Patient Resource Center for Medical Marijuana, which is working with Shively to develop designs and logistics.

Including black-market and medical sales, the national marijuana market is estimated at $100 billion.
