Mass. teacher killed, 14-year-old in custody

DANVERS, Mass., Oct. 23 (UPI) -- A Massachusetts teacher was found dead and a 14-year-old student has been charged with her killing, police said.

Colleen Ritzer, 24, a math teacher at Danvers High School, was found dead in a wooded area behind the school. A 14-year-old student, whose name was not released, has been charged with murder and is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Salem Juvenile Court, WBZ-TV, Boston, reported.

The Boston Globe said police were first alerted to a potential problem when the 14-year-old was reported missing after failing to come home from school Tuesday evening. Later that night, Ritzer was reported missing when she, too, failed to come home or answer her cellphone, Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said.

Danvers police began searching the school and found blood in a second-floor bathroom. Ritzer's body was found a short time later. The suspect was found by state troopers walking on Route 1 and brought back to the police station for questioning.

Blodgett wouldn't say how Ritzer died, except that it was apparent she was a homicide victim, or describe the nature of the relationship between the two.

He said there's "no reason to believe any other suspects are involved."
