Veterans' benefits could come to a halt

The military is still getting paid, but veterans' benefits could come to a screeching halt if the government shutdown is not resolved. Veterans took to the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday for a second time in three days to voice their plea to what they refer to as Congress's deaf ears.

WASHINGTON -- A rally organized by the Military Coalition had veterans urging Congress to end the government shutdown. Around five million veterans are a few, short weeks away from missing out on their monthly checks; checks that enable them to buy basic necessities, such as healthcare, food, rent and tuition.

It was the second rally in three days, but this one was not like the others. Rather than pointing a finger, veterans made a unified plea for an end to the government shutdown. "Stop the shutdown. let's get it together. lets stop the political bickering, and lets make a political agreement so that our veterans can receive their benefits," said Marty Callaghan of The American Legion.
