NEW YORK, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- The mother of the girl known for years as "Baby Hope" after her body was found in 1991 in New York told reporters Monday she will never be at peace.
Margarita Castillo did not address some of the mysteries of the case, including why she never reported her daughter, Anjelica, missing, WCBS-TV reported. She also did not open the door of her apartment in the borough of Queens.
"We are never going to have peace," Castillo said. "We are just waiting for justice."
The 4-year-old's body was discovered in a picnic cooler near the Henry Hudson Parkway in Upper Manhattan. Police detectives investigating her killing paid for her burial in St. Raymond's Cemetery in The Bronx and a headstone.
The grave marker, with the name "Baby Hope" carved on it, now has a laminated sheet of paper fastened to it identifying her as Anjelica Castillo.
A cousin, Conrado Juarez, 52, was arrested Saturday. Police said he admitted raping and killing the girl and said his sister, who has since died, helped him dispose of the body.
One neighbor, George Gonzalez, said Castillo is a good mother who was accompanied everywhere by her children. But he said no one ever talked about Anjelica.
Another neighbor suggested to the news channel NY1 that if Castillo had been a better mother her daughter might still be alive.
