WOBURN, Mass., Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Jared Remy, son of Boston Red Sox broadcaster and former player Jerry Remy, pleaded not guilty in Woburn, Mass., in the stabbing death of his girlfriend.
Remy, 34, is charged with six crimes. including first-degree murder, in the August death of Jennifer Martel, 27, his girlfriend and mother of their 4-year-old daughter Arianna Nicole.
Police said neighbors fought with Remy as he stabbed Martel in their Waltham residence, a day after he was arrested on assault charges and released for allegedly pushing Martel's head into a mirror.
He was arraigned the day after the incident.
"His mental state is difficult. It's just a very tragic situation," said his lawyer, Edward P. Ryan Jr., after the plea hearing at Middlesex County Superior Court Tuesday. He added that, in his meetings with Remy, he found the accused to be "an emotional mess," The Boston Globe reported.
Ryan's comments suggest Remy's defense will include an insanity defense or one based on his long-term steroid abuse, the Boston Herald said Wednesday.
Remy was ordered held without bail, with his next hearing scheduled for Tuesday.
