Gallup: GOP favorability rating drops to record low -- 28 percent

WASHINGTON, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- The Republican Party is viewed favorably by 28 percent of Americans, the lowest rating for either party since Gallup began asking the question in 1992.

The GOP favorability rating dropped 10 points in a month from September's 38 percent, Gallup said Wednesday. The poll, conducted Oct. 3-6, is Gallup's first since the Oct. 1 partial government shutdown, for which a majority of Americans blame Republicans in Congress.

The Democratic Party's favorability rating fell 4 points in a month and now stands at 43 percent.

A record 62 percent view the GOP unfavorably, while 49 percent view Democrats unfavorably.

Self-identified Republicans were more than twice as likely to view their own party unfavorably (27 percent) as Democrats were to see their own party unfavorably (13 percent).

Results are based on telephone interviews conducted Oct. 3-6, with a random sample of 1,028 adults ages 18 and older living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
