Shark chomps on California surfer's leg

EUREKA, Calif., Oct. 7 (UPI) -- A surfer was recovering Monday after a shark bit him on the leg off the Southern California coast, authorities said.

The attack occurred about 8:45 a.m. PDT Sunday at Bunkers, a popular spot for surfing near Humboldt Bay, the Eureka Times-Standard reported.

The man was bitten on the thigh. Other people on the beach used towels to staunch the bleeding until emergency personnel arrived.

The attack happened in the same area where a great white shark attacked another surfer in October 2012. That victim, Scott Stephens, also survived, the newspaper said.
