Causes revealed in death of four Houston firefighters

HOUSTON, Utah, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- The causes of death of four firefighters killed in a Houston hotel fire were revealed by the Harris County, Texas, Institute of Forensic Sciences.

What began as a small restaurant fire on May 31 spread to an adjoining hotel, causing the worst one-day loss of life in the Houston Fire department's history, The Houston Chronicle reported Wednesday, adding the firefighters died after a wall and rood section of the hotel collapsed.

The exact manner of each death had been categorized as "undetermined" by the Institute.

Engineer operator EMT Robert Bebee, 41, died of smoke inhalation and thermal injuries; Probationary Firefighter Ann Sullivan, 24, died of compressional asphyxia, blunt head trauma and smoke inhalation; Firefighter EMT Robert Garner, 29, died from compressional asphyxia, and Capt. EMT Matthew Renaud, 35, died of smoke inhalation, the institute announced.
