Teen waives detention hearing in arson deaths of mom, sister

HUTCHINSON, Kan., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- A 14-year-old Kansas boy charged with killing his mother and sister in a fire at their home has waived his right to a detention hearing, his attorneys say.

The teen, Sam Vonachen, was charged after investigators said they found an accelerant in several rooms on the first floor of the family home in Hutchinson, The Wichita (Kan.) Eagle reported Monday.

The bodies of Karla Vonachen, 47, and Audrey Vonachen, 11, were found in a second floor bedroom after the Thursday night fire, investigators said.

Steve Vonachen, 48, the teenager's father, was able to escape the blaze.

Sam Vonachen faces two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated arson.

The county prosecutor, Keith Schroeder, says he will try Vonachen as an adult.
