Shutdown threatens military academies' athletic events

WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- The government shutdown pushed into sports -- the U.S. Defense Department has suspended all athletic events for service academies.

A soccer game between the Naval Academy and Howard University scheduled for Tuesday already was canceled and Saturday's football game between Navy and Air Force on Saturday could be as well, The Hill reported.

"As a result of the government shutdown, the Department of Defense has suspended all intercollegiate athletic competitions at the service academies," the Naval Academy said in a statement.

The Naval Academy said it would make a decision about the game with Air Force by Thursday.

The scheduling likely depends on whether members of Congress and President Obama come to a resolution to fund the government before then.

A football game between Army and Boston College also is scheduled for Saturday in Massachusetts.

Congress failed to pass measures that would have kept the government operational, forcing the shutdown at midnight.
