LAKE CHARLES, La., Sept. 28 (UPI) -- A man was in custody Saturday in the shotgun slaying of a Louisiana pastor killed while preaching, authorities said.
Woodrow Karey Jr., 53, of Lake Charles alleged walked into the Tabernacle of Praise Worship Center about 8:20 p.m. CDT Friday and shot Pastor Ronald J. Harris Sr. twice before fleeing the church on foot, KATC-TV, and KLC-TV, Lafayette, reported.
Calcasieu Parish sheriff's deputies said Karey called the sheriff's office soon afterward and surrendered without incident, the TV stations said. He was being held in the local corrections center on a second-degree murder charge in lieu of $1 million bail.
Investigators found a shotgun and a .22-caliber pistol in a nearby wooded area.
Deputies said Karey has no known criminal history and it wasn't clear why he would have shot Harris.
