Poll: Americans view Obama's policy on Syria, Iran negatively

WASHINGTON, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Most Americans say they view President Obama's handling of Syria and Iran -- and his foreign policy generally -- negatively, results of a CBS Poll indicated.

Sixty-four percent say the Obama administration has not clearly explained its goals in Syria, results of the CBS News/New York Times poll released Tuesday indicated. The percentage of Americans saying they thought the goals had been explained rose to 28 percent from 14 percent earlier this month.

The president's approval rating on Syria saw an uptick to 37 percent from 33 percent two weeks ago, but remains mostly negative with 52 percent disapprove.

Concerning Iran, 22 percent said they don't think relations would improve much during the next few years, 41 percent said they expect them to remain as they are now and 32 percent said they expected relations to worsen, results showed.

A plurality -- 38 percent -- said they couldn't judge whether the recent outreach from Obama to the new Iranian president will lead to improvement. Thirty percent said it would make some difference in relations, and 30 percent said they didn't think it would matter much.

Concerning Obama's foreign policy overall, 40 percent said they approve of his handling of foreign policy, while 49 percent said they disapprove, results indicated.

Results are based on nationwide telephone surveys of 1,014 adults conducted Thursday through Monday. The margin of error is 3 percentage points.
