MIURFREESBORO, Tenn., Sept. 19 (UPI) -- A Tennessee family has sued a school board claiming their daughters were kicked off a high school girl's volleyball team because they complained about hazing.
The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Nashville, charges the Rutherford County Board of Education violated a federal law that requires gender equity for students in programs that get federal funding.
The family is not identified in the lawsuit because their three daughters are minors, the Daily News Journal in Murfreesboro, Tenn., reported Thursday.
The suit alleges the girls, who attend Siegel High School in Murfreesboro, were sexually assaulted last year by a teammate.
The school board has said that offensive touching took place, but that it was not of a sexual nature.
The alleged offending teammate was disciplined for "goosing" the players or poking them in the buttocks, but was not charged with any crime, said James Evans, a spokesman for Rutherford County Schools.
The school board says the girls were removed from the team because they repeatedly missed practice and that one girl cleaned out her locker and said she wanted to quit.
