CANTON, Ohio, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Hundreds of people forced to evacuate by a chemical fire at a closed plant in Canton, Ohio, were allowed to return home at noon Tuesday.
The fire at the former Conway Containers Co. plant, which began Monday night, was under control, WJW-TV in Cleveland reported. But firefighters remained at the scene to deal with hot spots and flareups.

A 21-block area was evacuated Monday because of the release of sulfur dioxide, the Canton Repository said. A city council meeting Monday night was canceled and schools in the area were closed Tuesday.
Conway Containers made plastic and cardboard shipping containers at the plant, which shut down in May 2011.
