WASHINGTON, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- This is National Singles Week in the United States.
The week was launched in the 1980s by the Buckeye Singles Council in Ohio.
It is also known as Unmarried and Single Americans Week because some people may not identify themselves as single if they are widowed or have partners, the U.S. Census Bureau said.
Singles week is the third full week of September each year
To mark the occasion, the Census Bureau compiled a list of facts and statistics about unmarried people in the United States in 2012:
-- There were 103 million unmarried people 18 years old and older -- 44.1 percent of all U.S. residents 18 and older.
-- Of the single residents 18 and older, 53.6 percent were women.
-- Of the single residents, 62 percent were never married, 24 percent were divorced and 14 percent were widowed.
-- There were 87 unmarried men 18 and older for every 100 women.
-- Of the single U.S. residents 25 years old and older, 26 percent had a bachelor's degree.
