DETROIT, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- An inmate who stabbed an officer, took his uniform and walked out of a Detroit courthouse was being sought Monday by authorities, officials say.
After escaping, 25-year-old Abraham Pearson is alleged to have carjacked a woman, then crashed the car a few minutes later and fled on foot, freep.com reported.
The fugitive is alleged to have stabbed deputy Harrison Tolliver, 63, in the neck in a courthouse lockup about an hour before Pearson was scheduled to appear in court to be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison. Pearson was convicted Aug. 26 on multiple charges including carjacking, armed robbery and weapons charges.
He then put on Tolliver's uniform, which enabled him to escape the building.
The 58-year-old woman whom Pearson is alleged to have carjacked at a parking lot was not injured, police said.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig said city police officers, sheriff's deputies, the FBI and U.S. Customs and Border Protection were involved in the search for Pearson.
The wounded deputy was in "great condition," said Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon, and was expected to be released from a hospital later in the day.
