Judge recovering after attack outside N.Y. village hall

WATERLOO, N.Y., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- A judge in central New York state has been hospitalized in guarded condition after authorities said he was attacked outside the village hall.

Waterloo Village Judge Roger W. Barto had just completed an arraignment when the attack occurred, WSTM-TV in Syracuse reported Thursday.

Barto was locking up the hall about 10 p.m. Saturday when he was hit from behind with the lid of a toilet seat and choked, said Judge Dean Mattoon.

Mattoon said he did not believe the attack was related to the arraignment.

Police officer James Chechak said Barto regained consciousness after the attack and called 911 but slipped in and out of awareness on the way to the hospital.

The judge told police there were two attackers.

Barto has been taken off a ventilator and his condition is improving, said Waterloo Mayor Ted Young.
