Chobani pulls yogurt tainted with mold

NEW BERLIN, N.Y., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- New York-based yogurt maker Chobani is quietly asking retailers across the country to pull yogurt contaminated with mold out of store dairy cases.

While the company has not issued a formal recall, retailers selling Chobani flavors expiring between Sept. 9 and Oct. 7 and marked with the code 16-012 have been instructed to pull the Greek-style yogurt, which has gained popularity in recent years, after customers began complaining it made them sick.

The (Portland) Oregonian said Wednesday customers on Chobani's Facebook page complained their yogurt tasted odd and some containers were bloated. Those who consumed the yogurt complained of vomiting and diarrhea.

In response, Chobani said it has fielded customer calls and emails and is working with those who said they've gotten sick. Amy Juaristi, Chobani's spokeswoman, said the contamination was caused be "a type of mold commonly found in the dairy environment."

She estimated only about 5 percent of the company's overall inventory was tainted and it was all made at the company's facility in Twin Falls, Idaho. She did not say where the tainted yogurt was sold.

The Food and Drug Administration has been notified though it rarely orders a product recall. Instead, the FDA usually orders companies to contact stores to remove the products and make public any suspected problems.
