Chicago Mayor Emanuel comforts bicyclist after accident with truck

CHICAGO, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- A bicyclist injured in an accident was comforted by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel who left a coffee shop when he heard a scream, the mayor's office said.

After a visit to an elementary school Tuesday, Emanuel was picking up a cup of coffee at a coffee shop near the intersection of Milwaukee, Chicago and Ogden avenues when he heard a loud noise, ran around a corner to find a woman on a bike had been hurt in a crash with a truck, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The mayor he stayed with her until an ambulance arrived, mayoral spokeswoman Sarah Hamilton said.

The mayor's decision was first reported on Twitter, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

"Just saw a biker clipped by a truck and dragged at Milwaukee and Ogden. @RahmEmanuel was coincidentally there and helped #wow #bike Chi," Windy City resident Jennie Rad posted on her Twitter page.

Earlier this year, the Chicago City Council approved Emanuel's plan to raise fines for cyclists who disobey the city's traffic laws and reckless motorists who endanger bicycle riders.
