Chicago-area police officer reportedly under investigation

CHICAGO, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- A federal grand jury appears to be investigating allegations a police sergeant in a Chicago-area town used excessive force, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The newspaper reported Tuesday that federal prosecutors issued a subpoena seeking records for a period in 2011 when Harold Zamiar, who has been with the Midlothian department for 13 years, intervened in a fracas outside a bar, using his baton to subdue a man. Zamiar was apparently off duty at the time and charges against the man of assault and resisting arrest were later dropped.

David Burke, the former Midlothian police chief, told the Tribune he thought the investigation centered on a 2010 incident. On that occasion, Zamiar chased two teenagers he thought were breaking into his car, parked outside his home in Midlothian.

Zamiar refused to say anything about the investigation, although he confirmed there is one, the Tribune said.

Burke said Zamiar "doesn't know what is going on."

"He's losing sleep, and he's quite upset about it," Burke said. "He's never done anything wrong."
