Tropical storm Kiko losing strength in Pacific Ocean off Mexico

MIAMI, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Tropical Storm Kiko, churning in the Pacific Ocean far off Mexico's Baja California coast, weakened further Sunday night, U.S. forecasters said.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its 8 p.m. PDT advisory that Kiko's sustained winds were at 50 mph -- down from 70 mph early in the day -- and it was heading to the north-northwest at 6 mph. Topical storm-force winds extended outward up to 70 miles.

The storm was about 395 miles west of the southern tip of Baja California, the forecasters said.

Kiko was expected to slow down and weaken into a depression Monday and atrophy into a remnant low by Tuesday.
